Why Selous Game Reserve Should Be on Your Safari Bucket List

Did you know that Selous Game Reserve, now part of Nyerere National Park, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa and home to over 2,100 plant species and thousands of wildlife?

Located in southern Tanzania, Selous offers one of the most authentic safari experiences you can have.

While it may not have the same fame as Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Selous’ remoteness and diverse landscapes create an unparalleled safari adventure. If you’re looking for a place that promises thrilling encounters with wildlife in a pristine, tranquil setting, Selous is a must-visit.

Overview of Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve covers an area of approximately 50,000 square kilometres, making it the largest game reserve in Africa. Its vast, unspoiled wilderness includes tropical forests, woodlands, savannahs, and wetlands.

This variety of ecosystems supports a wide range of wildlife and offers different safari experiences, from game drives to boat safaris on the Rufiji River. Established in 1896, the reserve is named after British explorer Frederick Selous, and in 1982 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Selous region offers an authentic safari experience, largely untouched by mass tourism. Visitors can explore its remote corners, enjoy an intimate wildlife experience, and discover the hidden gems of Tanzania’s southern circuit. Whether you’re on a game drive, walking safari, or cruising down the river, Selous will provide you with memories that last a lifetime.

Having visited their with my family (3 young kids, my wife & I), the author can testify that it is truly an unforgettable experience.

Whether it’s watching giraffe’s elegantly crossing a road or witnessing a pride of lions basking in the morning sunlight, Selous offers a magnificent family adventure.

Wildlife in Selous Game Reserve

Selous is a wildlife haven, with some of Africa’s most iconic species calling it home. It is one of the best places to witness wildlife in its natural habitat. Here are some of the standout animals you can expect to see:

Elephants

Selous is home to one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa. These majestic animals are often spotted traversing the open plains or drinking from the Rufiji River. The reserve’s varied landscapes, including open savannah and dense woodlands, provide the perfect setting for observing elephants in their natural environment.

African Wild Dogs

The African wild dog, one of the continent’s most endangered species, is a rare but exciting sight in Selous. These pack hunters can be seen running across the plains in search of prey. Selous is known for offering one of the best opportunities to spot these elusive animals in the wild.

Lions

While lion sightings are not as frequent as in other parks like Serengeti, Selous offers a more intimate experience. Lions in Selous roam the vast grasslands and dense forests, often leading their prides on hunting expeditions. Their elusive nature makes a lion sighting even more thrilling for those fortunate enough to spot them.

With the right guide, lion sightings are much more of a possibility.

Hippos and Crocodiles
The Rufiji River is the heart of Selous, and it is home to large groups of hippos and crocodiles. These creatures can be seen relaxing in the river’s warm waters or sunbathing on its banks. A boat safari along the river is the best way to observe these majestic creatures up close.

You also have the option of frequenting one of many small lakes that hippos like to visit for bathing. This can make for quite a breathtaking rest stop during your safari.a

Giraffes, Zebras, and Antelope
Selous is also home to a wide variety of herbivores. Reticulated giraffes, zebras, and antelope species like Grant’s gazelles and impalas are commonly seen on the grassy plains. These animals often form the perfect photo opportunities, especially at sunset when the light casts a golden hue over the savannah.

Best Time to Visit Selous Game Reserve

The best time to visit Selous depends largely on what you’re hoping to experience during your safari.

  • Dry Season (June to October)
During the dry season, wildlife gathers around the few remaining water sources, making it easier to spot animals. This is also the best time for game drives, as the vegetation is thinner, and animals are more active. However, temperatures can soar, so it’s important to stay hydrated and wear appropriate clothing.
  • Wet Season (November to May)
The wet season, from November to May, is less popular with tourists, but it offers its own advantages. The landscape is lush and green, and while some areas might be harder to access, the scenery is spectacular. Additionally, this is the calving season for many herbivores, making it a great time to see baby animals. The wet season also means fewer tourists, providing a more exclusive experience.

Best Months for Wildlife
If your primary goal is to witness large herds of elephants or lions hunting, visit between June and October. However, for a quieter and more peaceful safari experience with beautiful scenery, the rainy season offers a different kind of beauty.

How to Get There

Selous Game Reserve is located in southern Tanzania, about 250 km from Dar es Salaam. The easiest way to reach Selous is by taking a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam to one of the airstrips within the reserve, such as the Selous Airstrip or the Mtemere Airstrip. Several airlines, including Coastal Aviation and Precision Air, operate scheduled flights.

For those looking for a more adventurous route, it’s also possible to drive from Dar es Salaam, although this can take 5 to 7 hours on gravel roads, depending on your destination within the reserve.

When we visited, we used a safari car with our car picking us up early morning (around 5am) from Dar Es Salaam and driving us all the way to our resort just outside the park. This offered an inexpensive and convenient way to get to the park. It also meant we had full control of our transportation from start to finish.

Alternatively, some visitors opt to travel to Selous via the town of Morogoro, then continue by car.
